Abstract
A detailed analysis is provided to explain both direct and indirect effects of fuel use on forest ecosystems, using primary information collected at the basic level of woodfuel consumption, the farm village. It is concluded that demands for woodfuel in the traditional rural sector have less significant (direct) effects on vegetation status compared with factors such as agricultural land use. Notwithstanding, certain new developments related to harvesting, processing and use of wood for fuel potentially pose long-term direct threats to forest stability in the absence of necessary planning and managerial attention.
