A topological existence proof for SO(n)-anti-self-dual connections

A sufficient condition for the existence of an irreducible anti-self-dual connection on a principal SO(n)-bundle over a compact, smooth 4-manifold is given. The proof uses the fact that the existence problem reduces to a question in finite-dimensional obstruction theory. Calculation of an Euler class over an associated classifying space solves the problem.
