Abstract
Transfer matrices have been shown to be useful concepts for deterministic or random self-similar structures with or without frustration. They exploit the connections between the microscopic and global properties. For effective one-dimensional structures, homogeneous or not, they make it possible to solve linear or nonlinear differential equations by discretization as was classically done by means of the Poincaré transfer matrices.
