Soliton-like structures in two spatial dimensions and their properties

Many models, of physical relevance, in (2 + 1) dimensions possess solutions which describe spatially extended structures and so resemble solitons of (1 + 1)-dimensional models. We describe the appearance of these structures in some of these models and discuss their properties.
