Abstract :
The present study seeks to answer the question that whether chatting has any affect either negative or positive on the speaking ability of Iranian EFL (English as a Foreign Language) learners. In doing so, twenty male subjects chosen from 46 participants were divided into a control and an experimental group homogenized and pre-tested by using English Unlimited Placement Test (Cambridge University Press 2010). Then the control group received a general speaking course in the form of face-to-face communication as a placebo and the experimental group received special exercises using chat via internet. After ten sessions, all subjects were tested (post-test) via English Unlimited Placement Test. The results of both pre and post tests in each control and experimental groups showed that chatting had a positive influence on the speaking ability of EFL learners.
