Abstract
In this paper, profiles of general pencil grinding wheels are applied as the generating surfaces for enveloping various variable pitch lead screws surfaces. Screws with and without meshing elements are studied. For screws with meshing elements, cylindrical, conical, hyperboloid of one sheet, and concave and convex involute surfaces of the wheels are used. The surfaces of these meshing elements are the same as the surfaces of the pencil grinding wheels, which are conjugate to the screws. As a result, solid models of generated screws without/with meshing elements are developed using a Silicon Graphics workstation to simulate kinematic motion and to verify the proposed concept.
