Metathetical synthesis of La2(PdF6)3 and the vibrational spectra of the PdF62− anion

Slow mixing of solutions of La(AsF6)3 in anhydrous hydrogen fluoride (aHF) and Cs2PdF6 in aHF at room temperature gives a pure yellow compound La2(PdF6)3 insoluble in aHF. The amorphous obtained La2(PdF6)3 is very sensitive to moisture and once dry and isolated it solvolyses in contact with fresh aHF. It represents a new type of compound in the systems rare earth (Ln) trifluorides/transition metal (M) tetrafluorides (LnF3:MF4=2:3). Infrared (615 cm−1) and Raman data (558, 276 and 212 cm−1) show the presence of PdF62− anions in La2(PdF6)3. K2PdF6, Cs2PdF6, and Pd2F6 were synthesized for comparison and investigated by vibrational spectroscopy.
