Abstract :
Intercalation of platinum-metal fluorides into graphite has been carried out using either the gas–solid reaction with gaseous RuF5 or OsF5, or the liquid–solid reaction in anhydrous HF at room temperature, with RhF5, IrF5 or AuF3. The obtained graphite intercalation compounds crystallize in stages 1–3, depending mostly on the nature of host graphite. The oxidation state and the structural environment of the intercalated transition element have been deduced from X-ray diffraction (XRD), magnetism, X-ray absorption spectra (EXAFS), XANES and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) studies.
