Abstract :
Synthesis of functionalized 5,6-dihydro-4-hydroxy-2-pyrones via a novel formal cycloaddition reaction between electron-deficient aldehydes and pyrandione 2 is described. Pericyclic and aldol-like pathways have been proposed.
