Abstract
A microsomal-bond cytochrome P-450 enzyme system has been discovered in the roots of Aphelandra squarrosa that is responsible for the stereospecific intramolecular phenol coupling of (S)-dihydroxyverbacine to aphelandrine. The biogenesis of the closely related alkaloids orantine (ephedradine A) and ephedradines B, C and D should follow a similar biogenetic pattern.
