Abstract :
This paper summarizes the results obtained from several finite elements models of a new design for a vertical joint configuration in precast architectural panels. Non-linear FE analyses were used to compare the viscoelastic damping capacity of a V-shaped and a straight vertical joint (flat joint). Experimental results from tests on latex modified mortar (LMM) were utilized to evaluate the mechanical characteristics of non-linear damper elements used to model the joint material. Different percentages of latex content were studied as the joint material. Numerical results show better behavior of the V joint as compared with the flat joint under dynamic reversed cyclic load tests. The results show a linear dependence of stiffness on displacement and of damping on the square of the displacement. Both stiffness and damping are frequency dependent. The strength, stiffness and damping properties obtained for the V-joint configuration were included in the analysis of a six-bay, 10-storey frame, subjected to the El Centro 1940 ground motion. The variation on the demand was evaluated as a function of the percentage of latex included in the latex modified mortar used as joint material. Results show that more than 20% of latex in LMM reduces significantly the demand.
