Concise and stereocontrolled synthesis of the southern γ-butyrolactone subunit of polycavernoside A

The southern γ-butyrolactone subunit 8 of polycavernoside A was readily assembled by a novel and connective methodology involving an initial ene-reaction followed by an intramolecular oxidative cyclisation.
