Abstract :
The main goal of this paper is to describe a process developed to reduce the cost of composite and steel semi-rigid endplate joints. The developed process is based on an adequate selection of the most significant variables that controls the joints structural performance to obtain effective cost solutions. This procedure was based on the use of a genetic algorithms producing trustable results in terms of economy and efficiency, with a reduced computational effort. Four set of examples involving flush and extended endplate joints are presented to illustrate the developed optimization procedure. These joints were initially considered to be made only with steel members. In a subsequent phase equivalent composite joints were also considered to enable a direct comparison of the these alternative typologies. The global costs associated to the adopted joints were evaluated taking into account parameters like: endplate dimensions, number of adopted bolts, bolt diameter among others. The performed examples validated and proved the viability of using GA to optimize composite and steel semi-rigid joints.
