Abstract
The growth and thermal stability of ultrathin layers of vanadium and iron on the W(110) face is investigated as a function of temperature between 150 and 1500 K. For both metals the quasi Frank–van der Merwe mechanism of layer growth was observed. Desorption parameters were determined and, in the case of Fe also the critical temperature for the surface gas-condensate transition.
