Abstract :
Orientation and charge transfer upon adsorption of dimethylsulfide (CH3SCH3) on Ni(1 1 0) surface has been studied by near-edge X-ray absorption fine structure (NEXAFS) and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) techniques. It is found that dimethylsulfide adsorbs molecularly on Ni(1 1 0) surface. Polarization dependence S K-edge NEXAFS indicates that the S–C bond is tilted 19 ± 8° from the surface. Above room temperature, the S–C bond breaks and creates atomic sulfur. An amount of charge transfer (0.62 electron) from nickel to dimethylsulfide molecule has measured using S 1s XPS.
