Abstract :
We have characterized the Pt(111)/Ag surface at silver coverages ≤1 monolayer (ML) using photoemission of adsorbed xenon to monitor the local work function and high-resolution electron energy loss spectroscopy (HREELS) to observe the vibration frequency of CO molecules chemisorbed on Pt sites. All our results are consistent with the intermixing model derived from scanning tunnelling microscopy observations (H. Röder et al., Phys. Rev. Lett. 71 (1993) 2086). The HREELS data indicate that the strong vibrational red shift (7.6 meV) of the CO stretch vibration observed on the Pt islands with increasing silver coverage may be correlated with coverage-dependent surface strain.
