Abstract
The intensity and charge state of scattered 3 keV energetic Ne0 or Ne+ primary particles at Al(1 1 1) and KBr(1 0 0) has been measured as a function of the angular orientation of the samples. Basically, two interdependent factors determine the scattering intensities: structural shadowing and charge exchange. A conclusive qualitative explanation of the variation of the scattering intensities as a function of sample orientation has been obtained. For scattering at Al the normalization of the measured scattering intensities of Ne0 or Ne+ on the number of all scattered (Ne0+Ne+) particles is a necessary prerequisite in order to discriminate between the structural shadowing and the charge exchange aspects. In contrast, charge exchange and surface structure features are widely separated for scattering at KBr. For both samples, Al(1 1 1) and KBr(1 0 0), the primary charge state of the beam has only a minor influence on the different final charge fractions of scattered particles.
