“At forty cometh understanding”: A review of some basics of adhesion over the past four decades

The origins of the Annual Conference on Adhesion and Adhesives are traced. Some of the developments in adhesion science, particularly the various basic explanations and theories for the observed phenomena, are reviewed and their current status briefly, but critically, expounded.
