Abstract :
The growth behavior of Ca on Si(0 0 1) has been studied with scanning tunneling microscopy and low energy electron diffraction. During the growth of the first atomic layer at elevated temperature, Ca induces several different ordered surface reconstructions. In order of ascending metal content, they are: a 2 × n (n = 3, 4, 5) phase that has limited long range order, a 2 × 6 striped phase, and a 1 × 3 phase. The 1 × 3 phase covers the entire surface at and beyond the point where Ca silicide island growth starts.
