Computer simulations of steepest descent ballistic deposition

Simple models for the random deposition of particles are described. The particles are deposited sequentially along random vertical trajectories and follow paths of steepest descent after they first contact the growing deposit formed by earlier particles. Numerical results from large scale computer simulations in two dimensions (discs) and three dimensions (spheres) are reviewed, with an emphasis on the bulk structural properties of the deposits.
