Abstract :
Electron Paramagnetic Resonance (EPR) and optical absorption spectra of Cu2+ ions in K2SO4–Na2SO4–ZnSO4 glasses have been studied. EPR spectrum of the glasses doped with Cu2+ ions exhibits a pronounced peak at g=2.05 and a broad quadruplet with low signal intensity at g=2.39; the latter arising from the hyperfine splitting of g∥. The temperature dependence of the glasses doped with Cu2+ ions has also been studied. The optical absorption spectrum of the glasses doped with Cu2+ ions shows a single broad absorption band in the near-infrared region, which is attributed to 2B1g→2B2g transition. By correlating the EPR and optical spectral data, the molecular orbital coefficient β21 for Cu2+ ions has been evaluated.
