Optical non-linearity in β-carotene: new insight from electroabsorption spectroscopy

We report experimental electroabsorption data for β-carotene in the energy range from 1.3 to 5 eV which disclose a rich spectrum of excited states including the 2Ag state. These data allow a reassessment of the current understanding of the optical non-linearity of this model conjugated system.
