Abstract :
The structure and function of proteins and polynucleic acids in aqueous solutions are strongly influenced by their interaction with electrolytes and by the presence of water. We have investigated the changes in water structure around chloride ions induced by the proximity of biological macromolecules and we find that features characteristic of a modified state of water exist over a length scale of a fewهngstrِm.
