Abstract :
Emissions from C6F5X+· (X=H, F, Cl, Br and I) cations were observed by the photolysis of the parent molecules in the 10–40 eV region. The emission efficiency curve starting at the ionization energy of C6F5X forming the electronically excited π−1 cations shows nearly constant efficiency up to 16 eV, where the benzenic π electrons may be excited. The second 18–24 eV region, where halogen lone-pair excitation is important, also shows nearly constant efficiency but depressed to about one-half. The last part, where the fluorescence efficiency is very low, is the region of the inner-valence excitations.
