Laser-induced ESR shifts in the sodium atom spectrum

The effect of linearly and circularly polarized light on the electron spin resonance (ESR) spectrum of sodium atoms in the vapour phase is investigated for near-resonant optical frequencies. In standard ESR experiments the magnetic field is usually strong enough to resolve the Zeeman components of the D lines of sodium so that the symmetric and antisymmetric polarizabilities must be evaluated in the field.
