Abstract :
Apparently innocuous solvents such as methylene chloride and chloroform efficiently quench the fluorescence of azoalkane 1 with rate constants of up to 108 M−1 s−1 and deuterium effects of ≈ 3.2. This novel fluorescence quenching mechanism by CH bonds is attributed to radiationless deactivation promoted by covalent hydrogen bonding interactions.
