Abstract :
The characteristic intraconfigurational 4f11 fluorescence of the trivalent erbium 4I132 → 4I152 transition has been observed in endohedral Er2@C82. The fluorescence is weak and the lifetime is very short because of quenching by energy transfer to the carbon cage. Hydrogenating the carbon cage changes the spectrum and markedly increases the fluorescence.
