Mixing of exciton-transfer and charge-transfer contributions to the wavefunction of the naphthalene-hexachlorobiphenyl exciplex

Recent experiments suggest that an exciplex is formed between molecules of naphthalene and hexachlorobiphenyl in heptane solution. The anomalously small dipole moment of the exciplex is rationalized in terms of a simple model of the mixing (configuration interaction) between the intramolecular and charge-transfer excitations of the molecular pair.
