Abstract :
Investigation of the proton dynamics in an electric field is conducted in a ferroelastic phase using the NMR method. It is found that the width of the NMR absorption line is slightly narrowed by applying the electric field even below the paraelastic–ferroelastic phase transition temperature, Tc. This result indicates that proton motion is affected by applying the electric field even below Tc. Furthermore, the NMR absorption line shape measured below Tc is also changed by applying the electric field. This change of the NMR absorption line shape in the electric field results from the disappearance of the fine structure observed in the absence of the electric field. In addition, this result is observed not only in the AC electric field but also the DC electric field. From these results, it is deduced that the magnetic correlation between protons tends to disappear due to change of proton motion by applying the electric field.
