Abstract :
The influence of the non-ionic water soluble polymer (poly(ethylene glycol MW=400)) and cationic (alkyltrimetylammonium bromide, cetyl (CTAB), tetradecyl (TTAB), dodecyl (DTAB)), cetyldimetylethylammonium bromide (CDEAB), cetylpyridinium bromide (CPB), anionic (sodium dodecyl sulfate (SDS), sodium dodecane sulphonic acid (SDEO), sodium decane sulphonic acid (SDSA), sodium octane sulphonic acid (SOSA)), non-ionic (polyoxyethylene lauryl ether (Brij 35)) and zwitterionic (N-dodecyl-N,N-1-propanesulfonate (SB3-12), N-hexadecyl-N,N-dimethyl-3-ammonio-1-propanesulfonate (SB3-16)), couples on the base catalyzed reaction of N-phenylbenzohydroxamic acid (C6H5CON(OH)C6H5) at 55 °C has been studied. Cationic, anionic, zwitterionic, and non-ionic surfactants have all been shown to undergo polymer–micelle interaction. The observed pseudo-first-order rate constants obtained in the systems (surfactant/PEG/H2O) increases gradually with polymer content and then decrease (zwitterionic surfactant). The systems have also been characterized by conductivity and surface tension measurements.
