Abstract :
Insects possess an innate immune system which is composed of cellular and humoral mechanisms which respond to microorganisms invasion. Hemocytes in the hemolymph of the insects play a major role in the defense system. These are circulating cells found in the hemolymph of insects. The silk worm (Bombyx mori.L) is susceptible to bacterial infections. Antibacterial immune proteins have been well characterized. To investigate whether hemocytes of Bombyx mori larvae has anti microbial activity, the hemocyte aggregation studies were performed and checked with microorganisms like E.Coli, Micrococcus luteus and Bacillus subtilis. In this work we isolated hemocytes and determined the viability. Hemocyte aggregation assay was performed with different chemicals. The aggregation was high when a combination of PHA and Ca²? were used. Antibacterial activity in the hemolymph increased in parallel with cecropin activity after injection with soluble peptidoglycon. Hemolymph peptides showed high activity on Acinetobacter species. These studies were corellated with anti apoptosis studies of hemolymph of Bombyx mori.
