Claudius Regaud (1870–1940) : relecture des archives d’un pionnier de la radiobiologie et de la radiothérapie

Résumé 1870, Claudius Regaud fut un pionnier de la radiobiologie et de la radiothérapie. Histologiste, il mit au point une technique de coloration qui lui permit de décrire en détails le système reproducteur de nombreux modèles animaux. Radiobiologiste, il s’est opposé aux interprétations de Tribondeau et Bergonié sur les relations entre prolifération et radiosensibilité. Dès 1908, il a suggéré que la chromatine était la cible privilégiée des radiations. Médecin, il définit les premières bases des traitements par irradiation des cancers et traita des malades atteints de cancers incurables dès 1911. Militaire, il a organisé les hôpitaux de guerre en créant des équipes pluridisciplinaires pour le traitement chirurgical des plaies. Organisateur, il fut l’un des fondateurs de la Ligue contre le cancer. Radiothérapeute et curiethérapeute, il a fait du dispositif hospitalier, de recherche et d’enseignement de l’institut Curie un ensemble unique au monde, avec près d’un millier de patients traités. Voyageur, il fut à l’origine de la création de centres de radiothérapie et de recherche en radiobiologie dans de nombreux pays. Il s’est éteint en décembre 1940 en laissant un héritage scientifique impressionnant, mais aujourd’hui méconnu. Une relecture des archives familiales et du fonds de l’institut Curie est aujourd’hui l’occasion de rappeler son œuvre. n 1870, Claudius Regaud was a pioneer of radiobiology and radiotherapy. As histologist, he developed a new staining technique that allowed him to describe in detail all the reproduction system of a number of animal models. As radiobiologist, he contradicted the interpretations of Tribondeau and Bergonié about relationships between cell proliferation and radiosensitivity. In 1908, he suggested that chromatin was the main target of radiation. As physician, he defined the first bases of anti-cancer radiation treatments and treated patients suffering from incurable cancer from 1911. As military doctor, he organized war hospitals by creating multidisciplinary teams for the surgery of hurts. Organizer, he was one of the founders of the League against Cancer. As radiotherapist and brachytherapist, he contributed to make Institut Curie an international reference center for research and teaching, with nearly a thousand treated patients. As globe-trotter, he was at the origin of the creation of numerous worldwide radiotherapy and radiobiology centers. He died in December 1940 and let an impressive but still misknown scientific heritage. A re-reading of the familial archives and the Regaud Fund of Institut Curie is the occasion to remind the contribution of Regaud.
