Abstract :
A catalytic aldehyde olefination reaction has been discovered. A Cu(II) complex (5 mol %) derived from a salen-quinine mixed ligand catalyzed the reaction between aldehydes and two molecules of acetyl chloride to produce trans C–C double bonds exclusively. The new catalytic aldehyde alkenation reaction presumably goes through a C-3 acylated β-lactone intermediate that loses one molecule of CO2.
