Abstract :
In summary, biplane TEE had a high sensitivity and specificity, but a low positive predictive accuracy, for detecting left atrial thrombus in 60 patients who underwent mitral valve surgery. The high falsepositive rate observed in this study appears to reflect the difficulty in differentiating severe spontaneous echo contrast from thrombus on TEE.
