Abstract
Plaque compression does not appear to be a mechanism of percutaneous transluminal coronary angioplasty. Lumen enlargement is the result of combined plaque dissection, arterial expansion (presumably, limited by media-adventitial elasticity), and plaque redistribution, just like “footprints in the sand.”
