Abstract :
Laser-induced fluorescence of hydrogen molecules via the E , F 1 Σ g + → B 1 Σ u + transition was J-state selectively investigated by two-photon excitation from X 1 Σ g + to E , F 1 Σ g + . From the pressure dependence of the decay rate, the collisional quenching rate was found to decrease from 1.8 × 10 - 9 cm 3 / s for J = 0 to 0.9 × 10 - 9 cm 3 / s for J = 3. The collisional quenching cross-section was calculated by a Born approximation with a quadrupole–dipole interaction potential, which well reproduced the tendency of the experimental results.
