Role of dendropower in wastewater treatment and sustaining economy

The escalating demand of wood by commercial and energy sector in India has led to depletion of forest cover and thus has ruined the ecological stability. The gap between the demand and supply of wood is increasing at an unparalleled rate. The utilization of short rotation woody crops in form of vegetation filters can overcome the wood crisis together with bestowing the benefit of domestic wastewater treatment. The climatic and edaphic suitability of Tarai region in Uttarakhand State of India, bestow high potential for fast growing species of Eucalyptus and Poplar. High and continuous demand of wood in the commercial and energy sector has amplified the commercial forestry practice in this region. Fertigation potential of domestic wastewater as vegetation filter can reduce the investment cost in commercial forestry together with nutrient recovery and wastewater treatment. Present study will share the economic benefits that can be exploited at the regional level by utilizing Eucalyptus and Poplar hybrid species as vegetation filters to sustain the ever increasing wood demand and cost effective wastewater treatment.
