Abstract :
This study was to investigate the hypothesis that the flavanone-rich extract from Cyclosorus acuminatus (ME) had renoprotective properties in diabetic mice. After the experimental period of 12 weeks, the plasma lipid and glucose levels, and renal function in tested mice were determined. The levels of proinflammatory cytokines and antioxidation capacity in vivo were evaluated. Additionally, the renal expression of peroxisome proliferator activated receptor (PPAR) was examined using reverse transcription-polymerase chain reaction (RT-PCR) and western blot. The results showed that the levels of lipids and glucose in ME treated group were decreased accompanied by an improvement in renal function. The proinflammatory cytokine levels declined, and an enhancement of antioxidant enzymes activities was observed. Furthermore, the renal expression of PPAR was activated. Summarily, it was suggested that ME had the renoprotective nature via modulating the PPAR signalling pathway and eventually improving the extents of oxidative stress and inflammatory response.
