An efficient synthesis of a new class of spiro heterocycles: Synthesis of {3-spiro (1,3- Dimethyl barbitoric) (4-hydroxy-6-aryl-1,11b-dihydro-2H-pyrido[2,1-a] isoquinolin-1-yl)}

The 1:1 intermediate generated by the addition of isoquinolin to Phenylpropargyl aldehyde is trapped by 1,3 Dimethyl barbitoric to yield a new class of spiroheterocycles in good yields. The structures of these products were confirmed by NMR.
