A method for monitoring of Gd concentration in Gd-loaded scintillators

A method is described for the determination of the Gd content in liquid scintillators, based on detection of X-rays emitted after neutron captures on Gd. A sensitivity of ∼ 10 ppm of Gd by weight (for Gd concentration of ∼ 100 ppm) and ∼ 50 ppm (for Gd concentration of ∼ 1000 ppm) is achieved in a short measurement time, with modest equipment available in most physics laboratories.
