Recent advances in undulator performance optimization

A new method (“phase shimming”) for correcting the magnetic field errors of a permanent magnet undulator is described that allows an essentially ideal radiation spectrum to be obtained up to very high harmonic numbers. Some of the implications of this development for the practical use of higher harmonics are discussed.
