Abstract :
The ATLAS hadronic calorimeter (TileCal) has been designed as a sampling calorimeter using iron as passive material and tiles of scintillator as active material. The tiles readout is achieved by wavelength shifting (WLS) fibres on both tile sides. A good performance of the readout chain (tiles, fibres, photomultipliers) is crucial to reach the design performance. The optimisation of the design of various components has been to a large extent completed. The aim of this contribution is to show the TileCal construction method, the development of readout components, as well as the results of the various test beam periods using the TileCal prototype.
