Abstract :
An ion beam induced plasma was created by irradiating a cylindrical tube filled with a gas of 880 keV- 4He+ beam at the TIT RFQ-facility. The mean beam current in a macropulse is 2 mA. This beam can be focused onto a small spot area of about 1.1 mm2 of a gas target, and a beam power density of 176 kW/cm2 is achieved. The light emission from the heating gas is measured by a time-resolved optical and spectral diagnostic system in the wavelength range from 300 to 850 nm. The measured plasma temperature and density are compared with hydrodynamic simulations.
