Experience with the construction, operation and maintenance of vertex detectors at LEP

All major LEP experiments are equipped with silicon strip vertex detectors. Most of them have been upgraded several times to improve their performance and to match LEP2 requirements. The article reviews and compares the concepts of the vertex detectors at LEP and focusses on the experience gained by the detector groups. Solutions to problems encountered during construction and operation are discussed and aspects concerning maintenance presented.
