Abstract :
Registration is a fundamental task in image processing used to match two or more pictures taken, for example, at different times, from different sensors, or from different viewpoints. Specific examples of systems where image registration is a significant component include matching a target with a real-time image of a scene for target recognition, monitoring global land usage using satellite images, matching stereo images to recover shape for autonomous navigation, and aligning images from different medical modalities for diagnosis. Methods are classi?ed according to the di?erent aspects of mutual information based registration. The main division is in aspects of the methodology and of the application. The part on methodology describes choices made on facets such as preprocessing of images, grey value interpolation, optimization, adaptations to the mutual information measure and di?erent types of geometrical transformations. The part on applications is a reference of the literature available on di?erent modalities, on interpatient registration and on di?erent anatomical objects This paper overviews the theoretical aspects of an image registration problem. The purpose of this paper is to present a survey of image registration techniques.
