The HERMES recoil silicon detector

The technical design of a new silicon strip detector for the HERMES experiment has started. The detector is optimized to detect the slow recoil protons from deeply virtual Compton scattering. The readout is based on the HELIX-3.0 chip with increased dynamic range by charge division on the input signals. Charge injection tests and testbeam studies on prototypes indicate that an effective dynamic range greater than 70 MIP can be achieved.
