Abstract :
The paper reviews the status of ring imaging Cherenkov counters with vacuum-based photon detectors by first discussing the main motivation, the physics case. It then presents the results from the counters employed in the BaBar, HERA-B, SELEX and Hermes experiments, status of the next generation of precision B physics experiments BTeV and LHCb, and possible solutions for the upgrades of existing spectrometers BaBar and Belle.
