Abstract :
Compact Muon Solenoid (CMS) is one of the detectors designed to study very high-energy proton–proton interactions at the Large Hadron Collider (LHC) starting from 2007. Muons produced from these collisions will provide clean signatures for many of the interesting processes to be studied at the LHC. CMS has put great emphasis on developing a highly efficient muon system. The system has been designed to identify, reconstruct and measure muons with high efficiency and accuracy. Three different detectors have been chosen: Drift Tubes (DT), Cathode Strips Chambers (CSC) and resistive plate chambers (RPC). In this paper, we will describe the main features of each of these detectors and the system.
