Abstract
The half-life of 240Pu has been determined by measuring its growth in a 244Cm source. A thin source of 244Cm was prepared by an electromagnetic isotope separator for this measurement, and the daughter nuclide 240Pu was allowed to grow for 32.7 yr. The alpha spectrum of the 244Cm source was measured with silicon detectors and the ratio of the 240Pu and 244Cm activities was determined. From this ratio and the previously known half-life of 244Cm ( 18.11 ± 0.03 yr ) , the half-life of 240Pu was determined to be T 1 / 2 = 6545 ± 19 yr . This is in excellent agreement with the value of 6564 ± 11 yr recommended by the US Half-Life Evaluation Committee.
