Abstract :
Firewalls are usually the first component of
network security. They separate networks in different
security levels by utilizing network access control policies.
The major function of the firewall is to protect the private
network from non-legitimate traffic. The main purpose of a
firewall system is to control access to or from a protected
network. It implements a network access policy by forcing
connections to pass through the firewall, where they can be
examined and evaluated. Intrusion detection is the process of
monitoring and searching networks of computers and
systems for security policy violations. Intrusion Detection
Systems (IDSs) are software or hardware products that
automate this monitoring and analysis process. An IDS
inspects all inbound and outbound network activity, system
logs and events, and identifies suspicious patterns or events
that may indicate a network or system attack from someone
attempting to break into or compromise a system. The
network security in today’s world is a major concern because
of increasing threats from malicious users. Therefore,
designing a correct network security policy is a challenging
task. To design filtering rules to formulate a sound firewall
security policy and implement intrusion detection system to
capture network packets and detect attacks to fulfill this gap.
